GNS has published a booklet, jointly with NIWA, on the
New Zealand Continental Shelf Project.
This
document, written by members of the New Zealand Continental
Shelf Project Team, discusses various aspects of the terms
and formulae of article 76 of the United Nations Convention
on the Law of the Sea, and the challenges that have arisen
in applying them to the real-world submarine morphology and
geology of the Southwest Pacific.
It is likely to be of interest to other countries that
are preparing a submission to define the outer limits of
their continental shelf. The document includes a discussion
of the data used by the project, and the organisation of the
final report that will be used as the basis for New Zealand’s
submission to the Commission on the Limits of the
Continental Shelf.
